Build a Successful Team

There are a lot of studies and research that look into how teams work. In the case of the book (and later film starring Brad Pitt) Moneyball it was a case of analysing statistics and trying to find the performers that other teams had overlooked. However, this is just one way of looking at potential employees and today we will look at ways you could effectively put your team together.

One Size Does Not Fit All

The screenwriter William Goldman once remarked that in Hollywood “nobody knows anything”. As such this means there isn’t one single answer- some people feel that experience is crucial while others believe that a younger team will often have a point to prove.

The best advice is to look at the goals you want to attain and to look for the right people that will help achieve them – for example in a sales team you want team members that will have the confidence to sell whereas with a marketing group you may want more creative people on board.

Think Outside Your Industry

Some people may look at a company with a CEO outside the industry and say “Why did they bring that person in?” Although, this is not necessarily a bad thing – someone with a proven track record in a business outside your industry can provide a fresh perspective.

Balance Between Short Term And Long Term

Some people are like improvisers who react to events and aim for short term goals. Others prefer to take their time and consider things from a long term view. In practise a balance between the two of these perspectives will aid your business in the long term.

What Is Your Ethos?

This is important to consider when hiring someone – often this may be based on something that isn’t covered on a CV. While someone may have a great track record or experience if they don’t fit with the team then this can cause more problems than they solve.

Always Look To The Future

The temptation is to have a smaller team and bring people in to fill in as necessary when things change. The problem with this is that the interview process can take months and by that time you may have lost your edge over your rivals. This is why it is important to look at where your business is going and to prepare for future employment requirements before a vacancy needs to be filled.

Summary

  • Look for what’s right for your business rather than searching for a “perfect blend”
  • Consider someone from outside your industry for a fresh perspective
  • Find the balance between short term and long term thinkers on your team
  • Consider your company ethos- do your recruits fit what you are going for?
  • Don’t just look at what you need now, try to prepare for your needs in the future
